This is an old recording with slight interference for a few seconds in the beginning and a couple of missing lines at the end. I believe it is the voice of  Syed Hassan Al-Seri from Jeddah recorded over 25 years ago.

This is just a small anectode I thought I would share from the Book of Assistance lessons with Shaykh Abdul Aziz Ahmed.

The context was when the Shaykh was explaining the introduction of the Book of Assistance of Imam al-Haddad, where the Shaykh (Habib `Abdullah al-Haddad) mentions:

Imam al-Haddad was explaining the tradition of seeking advice from those who have the aptitude. It is this Imtithal al-Amr which is the greatest thing that one can do. It refers to answering the call of Allah and his Messenger Sallallahu `Alayhi wa Sallam. He mentioned that when the Imam mentions that it was a brother from the Family of the Prophet Sallallahu `Alayhi wa Sallam (Saadah) , he was talking about the tradition of learning and teaching of the noble family, not the superficial things asscoiated with the path, such as the clothes, shawls and other such secondery matters. This sincere method of learning and teaching the tradition as transmitted from Sayyiduna Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu `Alayh wa Sallam has been preserved, generation to generation, until our times. This is necessarily accompanied by acting upon it, which is a result of sincerity connected to the seeking of the knowledge itself. There have been many methods of teaching the prophetic tradition (Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah), and one such way is writing letters of sincere advice. This is exactly what the Book of Assistance is, as Imam al-Haddad is fulfilling the command to teach of a “sincere Sayyid treading the path of felicity”.

Shaykh `Abd al-`Aziz was talking about one of the teachers of al-Habib ‘Umar, al-Habib al-Haddar. He used to teach on the balcony of the Ribat for hours on end. The reason was that he knew that if he fell asleep, he would fall to his death. This illustrates the Himmah (Lofty Aspirations) we should have with Knowledge. This is the “Sabil as-Sa’adah” or “path of felicity” which Imam al-Haddad talks about in the Introduction to the Book of Assistance. This is a menifestation of the sinecirty of those who had truly mastered the path of knowledge and action, the people of Ma`rifah.

Another anectode that was taught was of how Allah aided Habib ‘Attas al-Habshi from the Communists in Yemen at the time. His real name was Abu Bakr which was on his passport though no one knew him by that. As he was on the plane fleing to Jeddah, the communists forced the plane down in order to capture Habib. They were searching for Habib `Attas whereas on his passport it said Abu Bakr and they left the plane alone! When Habib `Attas was in Jeddah, his stuedents in Tarim wished for his advice and Habib `Attas wrote them a treatise. This is simillar to the method that Imam al-Haddad used to impart the knowledge via the Book of Assistance which was also a letter of advice.

Many of the other scholars were targetted by the communist regime of South Yemen at the time, including Habib `Umar Bin Hafiz. His older brother and Shaykh, Habib `Ali al-Mashhur felt that his younger brother, Habib Umar would be next after their father was murdered. Habib left Tarim to the North. The communists ended up comming for him but it was too late as Habib had left! Habib `Umar was also implementing the command of Allah and his Messenger Sallallah `Alayh wa Sallam (Imtithal al-Amr, talked about earlier), when he returned to Tarim after studying with Habib al-Haddar in North Yemen, and in the Hijaz with Habib `Abdul Qadir, Habib Ahmed and Habib `Attas, and set up Dar al-Mustafa as a centre of `Ilm, Suluk and Da`wah. It is this sincere tradition of learning, acting and teaching the Qur’an and the Sunnah as understood by the majoirty of scholars, the Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-Jama`ah and preserved through the scholars and in this case the progeny of Sayyidina al-Muhajir ila Allah Ahmad Bin `Isa who fled `Iraq due to the various Fitan (such as Shi`ism, which is based on absurd premises, the persecution of the rulers, which the Imam was also faced with in Madinah and Makkah etc), to Hadramawt and found a people who were receptive to the Din yet not well-versed in sound knowledge, and they established a system of learning, implementing and teaching.

May Allah bless all our `Ulama al-`Amilun, those who act upon the knowledge and spread it for the benefit of the people. May Allah make us amongst them, Allahumma Amin.

In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Merciful

Praise be to Allah, a praise through which hearts are expanded, and may the peace of Allah and blessings be upon His slave, the chosen one (Mustafa), the guide, Muhammed, the pious one, the thankful, and upon his family and companions and those who follow them with rectitude among each one with a practicing heart.

Give praise to Allah, the Almighty for making you among those who comprehend this day of the great eid (feast). Eid is from among the specialities of this ummah (nation), from the sign of this religion’s manifestation and is from the rites of Islam. So upon you is to be concerned by it and its reverence.

The Almighty says, “Such (is his state): and whoever holds in honour the symbols of God, (in the sacrifice of animals), such (honour) should come truly from piety of heart.” [Quran 22:32]

Verily the sight of the people of iman is to the meaning of eid and attaining benefits from the Geneorous King; a sight fine, deep and wide for the one who would like to colour with the colour of Allah.

‘”(We take our) colour from Allah, and who is better than Allah at colouring. We are His worshippers.” [Quran 2; 138]

The reality of Eid for a believer is made clear to us and on this, some wise people have said, “It is not eid for him who wore new, but the eid is for him whose worship increased!!”
“It is not eid for one who beautifies himself by clothes and shoes, indeed the eid is for one who had his sins forgiven.”
So know from this, that a believer prepares to attain from the types of eid with the ability by assistance from his Lord therefore happiness follows him through the pouring of Allah’s bounties upon him from that which was exposed to him from this bounty, through the means of action, gifts, sacrifice and benefit in the time and period passing by him until he is exposed to a greater eid which is on the day he meets Allah and Allah is pleased with him.

He gives him glad tidings of Mercy from Him and His Pleasure and gardens in which there is residing comfort.

Therefore we should take an abundant portion in straightening our vision of these eids which descend into the world and are connected to the state hereafter until we become qualified for vast assistance from the Presence of the Generous King and until we hasten to act upon that which incumbents happiness and that which necessitates attaining good in the hereafter and that with which the heart is purified.

The day of eid al-adha in the purified law, they are distinguished by qualities and specialities by our master Muhammed, upon him be Allah’s peace and blessings and on his family and companions. From these are:

1- Standing the night of eid in different types of worship, from dhikr (remembrance) of Allah and tasbeeh (praise) and recitation of the Quran.

It is related from Mu’adh that the Messenger of Allah has said, “One who gives life to the four nights, paradise becomes incumbent upon him; the night of tarwiyah( 8th dhul-hejah), the night of ‘Arafah, the night of Nahr (sacrifice: eid al-adha) and the night of Fitr.”

2- Abundance in Takbeer especially after the prayers “and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you “

The slogan of takbeer is made to strengthen this meaning: the Most Kind, the Mighty in the Magnification of Allah, the Most- High, the Great, Majestic is He.

So make takbeer in on this day and revere the command of your Lord. The method of takbeer: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaaha illallah wallahu akbar, Allahu Akbar walillahil hamd.”

(Allah is Great, Allah is Great. There is no God but Allah and Allah is Great. Allah is Great and to Him belongs all Praise).

3- Going early for the eid prayer.

4- Bathing before going for the eid prayer to the mosque and to apply perfume and wear the best clothes on that day for it is the day of manifesting joy for the bounty of Allah.

O Mu’min (believer), be disciplined upon your dressing and wear your best clothes on the day, not for pride but to manifest the blessings of Allah upon you and joy for the Grace of Allah together with humilty and submisiveness for the Majesty of Allah, The Blessed.

5- Do not eat food before the prayer of Al-Adha, It has been narrated from Anas that “the Prophet never used to leave on the day of Al-Fitr until he had eaten, and would not eat on the day of Al-Adha until he had prayed”.

6- Go to the Eid prayer on a path and return on another path that you go before. Also go by walking if you can to follow-up prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

The wisdom from this is: in judgment the path where he goes in, will witness and all the angles of Allah who are crowded the paths in this special day. The ground will talk in judgment in what have made on it whether bad or good actions.

7- Start with whom you met in the path with salaam (Asalamu Alikom), this is what was Prophet Muhammad doing. Also smile on the others faces, and handshake other Muslims with cordially and merciful.

As prophet Muhammad said: “handshaking will remove the hostility from you”. “Do you want me to tell you about something if you do it you will love each other impart salaam between you”.

8- Congratulate insurers for attending the day of Eid.

9- Be thinking about Allah’s grace and eid prayer with devout heart and hear the discourse after praying with devout heart in this discourse.

10- Spend the rest of your day in the meaning of congratulating and visiting your relatives, in commuting the beneficial conversation, also in spreading happiness between people, and giving them food and drink with grateful and thank Allah. “Allah loves from his slaves when they eat food to thank him…..”

11- While you eat from Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him to gathering with the members of your family and relatives.

12- Copiously from the charity for poor people and enamors.

May Al-Haqq (Allah) make our days and nights eids (feasts) in (attaining) nearness to Him and Pleasure from Him, in actions according to His obedience, in increasing in good deeds and in contemplating on the sins and wrong-deeds until the eid of meeting Allah while He is pleased with us until the eid of a good ending, until the eid of death upon iman and Islam.

Ustadh Amjad Tarsin, Jazahullah Khayran, has translated the relevant parts of the Kanz an-Najah was-Surur with regards to Dhul Hijjah. May Allah benefit us all by it.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله الذي أنزل على عبده الكتاب ولم يجعل له عوجا
وصلى الله وسلم على سيدنا ومولانا محمد وعلى آله الطيبين الطاهرين وأصحابه الغر الميامين

All praise is due to Allah, and may endless blessings be upon His Beloved Messenger Muhammad, his Kin, and his Companions.

These are excerpts taken from the book “Kanz Al-Najāḥ wa As-Surūr” (The Treasures of Success and Happiness) regarding the benefits and special qualities of each month and how one should take advantage of them.

Know that Dhul Ḥijjah is a great and sacred month in which the Holy Pilgrimage takes place. It is a month in which blessings are plentiful, du‘ā’ is answered, and Allah takes care of people’s needs. In it are the “ten nights” which Allah swears by in the Qur’ān: {By the daybreak and ten nights}. The majority of Tafsīr scholars have stated that Allah is referring here to the ten nights of Dhul Ḥijjah.

Some scholars state that there are 3 groups of 10 days/nights which are the most preferred by Allah:
1. The first 10 days of Dhul Ḥijjah,
2. The first 10 days of Muḥarram, and
3. The last 10 nights of Ramaḍān.

According to some scholars, the best amongst the 3 are the first 10 days of Dhul Ḥijjah because in them are the days of ‘Arafah and ‘Eīd. The Prophet, peace and mercy of God be upon him stated, “There are no days more preferred by Allah than the ten days of Dhul Ḥijjah; and there are no nights more preferred than its nights.”

Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, said, “There are no days more preferred by Allah the Exalted than these ten days, so make plenty of tahlīl (saying “Lā ilaha illa Allāh”) and takbīr (saying “Allāhu Akbar”), for these are days of tahlīl and takbīr and remembrance of Allah, Mighty and Glorious is He.”

It is also highly recommended to fast the first nine days, especially the 9th day of Dhul Ḥijjah (the Day of ‘Arafah).

Things to do:

• Fast the first nine days:

Our Beloved Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said, “One fast during these days is equal to the fasting of one complete year, and the worship of one night during this period is equal to worship during Laylat al-Qadr.” [Tirmidhī]

• The 9th Day:

It is particularly important to fast the 9th day of Dhul-Ḥijjah (known as the Day of ‘Arafah).The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I have hope in Allah the Exalted that the fast of ‘Arafah will be an atonement for the sins of the past and forthcoming year.” [Tirmidhī]

• Lā ilāha illa Allāh:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whosoever says during the first 10 days of Dhul Ḥijjah this supplication 10 times each day:

لا إله الا الله عَدَدَ الدُّهور، لا إله إلا الله عَدَدَ أمواج البُحور، لا إله إلا الله عددَ النَّباتِ والشَّجَر، لا إله إلا الله عدد القَطْرِ والمَطَر، لا إله إلا الله عدد لَمْحِ العيون، لا إله إلا الله خَيرٌ مما يجمَعون، لا إله إلا الله من يومِنا هذا إلى يومِ يُنْفَخُ في الصور .

Lā ilaha illa Allāh ‘adad ad-duhūr, lā ilaha illa Allāh ‘adad amwāj al-buḥūr, lā ilaha illa Allāh ‘adad al-nabāt wa al-shajar, lā ilaha illa Allāh ‘adad al-qaṭri wa al-maṭar, lā ilāha illa Allāh ‘adad lamḥ al-‘uyūn, lā ilāha illa Allah khayrun min mā yajma‘ūn, lā ilāha illa Allah min youmina hādhā ila youmi yunfakhu fī al-ṣūr – all of his future and past sins will be forgiven.” [Ṭabarānī].

The Day of ‘Arafah:

• It is very beneficial to repeatedly say:

لا إله إلا الله وحْدَهُ لا شريكَ له، لهُ المُلْكُ وله الحمدُ وهو على كلِّ شيءٍ قدير

“Lā ilāha illa Allāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-ḥamd, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shayy’in Qadīr.” This is related in many ḥadīths.

• Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be well pleased with him and his father, said, “Whosoever reads ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Aḥad’ (Chapter 112 of the Qur’ān) 1,000 times on the Day of ‘Arafah will be given whatever he/she asks for.”

• The best thing to occupy oneself with during this day is du‘ā. Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash‘arī, may Allah be pleased with him, “They are days in which du‘ā is not turned back. How would du‘ā be turned back during these days [i.e. Ten days of Dhul Ḥijjah] when the Day of ‘Arafah is amongst them, which was narrated as being the best day in the world.” [Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ collection].

May Allah give us the success to benefit from these blessed days. Consider how seriously we take things during the last 10 nights of Ramaḍān and try to exert a similar effort during these days. {And I only created jinn and humans for them to worship Me}. This is what we were made for and Allah gives us times like these so that we can excel great distances in a short time. Do not let it pass you by. The glorious treasures of your Lord are there for the taking, you just have to expose yourself to His Grace.

والحمد لله رب العالمين

NOTE: In order to be concise, the exact strength of certain ḥadīths have not been mentioned. It is agreed upon by the vast majority of scholars to use ḥadīths of various levels of authenticity to encourage people to do extra acts of worship and goodness.

The Acts of the Righteous During These Days

The following are adhkār [invocations] that the Ṣāliḥīn [righteous people] would read ten times every day for the first ten days of Dhul Ḥijjah:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيم
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُقدِّمُ إِليْكَ بين يَديْ كُلِّ نَفَسٍ وَلَمْحَةٍ وَلَِحْظَةٍ وَخَطرَةٍ وَطَرْفَةٍ يَطرِفُ بِهَا أَهْلُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ ، وَكُلِّ شَيءٍ هُوَ فَي عِلْمِكَ كَائِنٌ أَوْ قَدْ كَان .. أُقدِّمُ إِلْيَكَ بَينَ يَدِيْ ذَلِكَ كًلِّهِ ..
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ اللَّيَالِي وَالدُّهُور، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ الأَيَّامِ وَالشُّهُور.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ أَمْوَاجِ البُحُور، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ أَضْعَافِ الأُجُور.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ قَطَرِ الْمَطَر، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ أَوْرَاقِ الشَّجَر.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ الشَّعَرِ وَالوَبَر، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ الرَّمْلِ وَالْحَجَر.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ الزَّهْرِ وَالثَّمَر، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ أَنْفَاسِ البَشَر.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ ذُنُوبِنَا حَتَّى تُغْفَر، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ لَمْحِ العُيون.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ مَا كَانَ ومَا يَكُون، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَمَّا يُشْرِكُون.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُون, لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ في اللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَس.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ فِي الصِّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّس، لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ الرِّيَاحِ في البَرَارِي وَالصُّخُور.
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ مِنْ يَومِنَا هَذَا إِلَى يَومِ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّور لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ أَجْمَعِين
لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ مِنْ يَومِنَا هَذَا إِلَى يَومِ الدِّين ، فِي كُلِّ لَحْظَةٍ أَبَدَا ، عَدَدَ خَلْقِه، وَرِضَى نَفْسِه، وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهْ، وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِه

Translation:
In the name of God, the All-Compassionate, the All-Merciful. O God I present to You in front of every breath, every second, every instant, every thought, every blinking of the eye of the peoples of the heavens and the earth, and everything which is existent in Your knowledge or was existent, I present to

You in front of all of this:

Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of nights and ages,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of days and months,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of waves in the oceans,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the multiplication of rewards,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of raindrops,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of leaves on the trees,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the amount of hair and fur,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the amount of sand and rocks,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of flowers and fruits,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of breaths of mankind,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of our sins so that they are forgiven,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of blinking of eyes,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the amount of that which has been and that which will be,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – Exalted is He above that which people worship alongside Him
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – (this is) better than that which they amass (of the dunyā),
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – in the night when it darkens,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – in the morning when it breathes,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of winds that blow in the desert and the number of rocks,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – from this day to the day on which the Trumpet is blown,
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – the number of His entire creation
Lā ilāha illa Allāh! – From this day to the Day of Recompense!
This is to be read ten times, and at the end read:
In every instant, forever – [the total of] the number of His creation, to His satisfaction, the weight of His throne, and the amount of ink of His words.

This is also to be read ten times:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ مَا اتَّصَلتِ العُيُونُ بِالنَّظَر وَتَزْخَرَفَتِ الأَرَضُونَ بِالْمَطَر، وَحَجَّ حَاجٌّ واعْتَمَر وَلَـبَّى وَحَلَقَ وَنَحَرَ وَطَافَ بَالبِيْتِ العَتِيقِ وَقَبَّلَ الْحَجَر وَعَلَى آلِهِ وصَحْبِهِ وَسَلِّمْ فِي كُلِّ لَحْظَةٍ أَبَدَا مِثْل ذَلِك ، عَدَدَ خَلْقِكَ وَرِضَى نَفْسِكَ وَزِنَةِ عَرْشِكَ وَمِدَادِ كَلِمَاتِك

O God send blessings upon our Master Muḥammad as much as the eyes see, as much as the earth becomes verdant after rainfall, the number of people making Ḥajj and ‘Umra, making the talbiya2, shaving their heads, making ṭawwāf around the Ancient House and kissing the Stone and upon his family and companions in every instant forever, [the amount of] the number of Your creation, to Your satisfaction, the weight of Your throne and the amount of ink of Your words.
